hint (?) : when I clic on the dektop "system > preferences > sun java 6 Plugin control panel" nothing happens

any idea when firefox 3 beta 4 will get into ubuntu? my university website uses webct blackboard, and not only does it require java, but also there was an error with the javascript engine that just got patched in beta 4. not being able to get to a university website, renders one of the main functions of my computer, and i assume many other students computers useless. hopefully, beta 4 gets into ubuntu soon, and this bug gets fixed so that students can access the main content page on their universities content management system.

not sure when firefox 3 beta 4 will be added but i'm sure that a later
version that beta 3 will be included with the final release. The final
release should have the final version of firefox 3 otherwise it would be
a bit weird having unfinished software in a final release.

Same problem here with FIrefox beta 4. Tried to remove sun-java6-plugin and then install it via Firefox, but the problem is still there

that's wierd, i'm sure it'll be fixed in the beta release.

responding to myself...
at last, I could make it work
you dont have to re install firefox or java or bother about 32/64 bits support
java 6 and firefox-3.0b4 are already installed in Ubuntu 8.04 beta 64 bits that I use
but there is no symlink between them [there are 1/2 dozen other symlinks that do not work]
cd /usr/lib/firefox-3.0b4/plugins [not any other]
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so [_oji is important]
then about:plugins in firefox shows the java plugin
and applet is recognized

The bug is still there in hardy beta!

The workaround is to do:
sudo ln -s /etc/alternatives/xulrunner-javaplugin.so /usr/lib/firefox-3.0b4/plugins/

None of the workarounds listed above worked for me. Strangely enough, the java applets are running in Opera, but not in Firefox 3 Beta 5

According to this link:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?searchon=contents&keywords=libjavaplugin_oji.so&mode=exactfilename&suite=hardy&arch=any

There are no AMD 64 packages with libjavaplugin_oji.so in it :( Maybe I'm reading this wrong? This file does not exist on my system as of April 8th and sun-java6-jdk installed.

/usr/lib/jvm/ia32-java-6-sun-1.6.0.04/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so ia32-sun-java6-bin [not i386] looks promising.

And you'd do better to report on the master bug, not a duplicate.

The solution of malokrant it works great for me in a ubuntu hardy heron system in mozilla firefox 3 beta 5, i just made this:
1.- Install the ubuntu-restricted-extras from synaptics or in the console with
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
2.- Go into the console and write this:
cd /usr/lib/firefox-3.0b5/plugins [not any other]
After, you must put this:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
3.- Write about:plugins in the navigator and you must to find the java plugin at the end of the list of plugins

Use and Enjoy!!!
Greetings!!!
::::::spanish version:::::::

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
2.- luego tu debes poner esta instrucción:
cd /usr/lib/firefox-3.0b4/plugins
3.- Después hacemos un enlace de la siguiente manera
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

¡¡Y listo si hiciste todo bien funcionará de maravilla!!
Saludos

I have my java applets working on firefox beta 5 but only those that are referenced on the web page by the depreciated <applet> tag. Those using the <object> tag are failing.
