Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

When selecting a radiobox or checkbox on a webpage it becomes rendered as a larger empty square and doesn't get rendered correctly until focus is moved away. This makes it difficult to determine the state of the widget.

I can't replicate this, what theme are you using? Do you see this problem with clearlooks?

It happens with domino style here as well on KDE (kde-style-domino). Works well with Konqueror, so the bug is probably GTK/Firefox dependant.

The theme is "Firefox (default) 2.0". I am also running KDE
(kubuntu), sorry I may not of been clear about this in my original
post. I have 3 systems running Kubuntu Hardy and all exhibit this
behavior. All have the ubufox packaged installed as well.

I will try to do some diagnostics and play with some other themes if I
find some time. I lost a whole bunch of time on a new install the
other day due to a language-pack issue causing KDE not to start :(.

This problem does not exist in Ubuntu. It is definitely a Kubuntu issue.

It _was_ a gnome problem in Hardy for some days, but it was solved several weeks ago.

Sorry, I thought a while this originally was my bug report about a similar problem - that was fixed.

I have the same problem (When a checkbox has focus it becomes a bigger empty square), how did you solve this?

I'm on kubuntu 8.04, ff 3b4, updgraded yesterday. I've had ff3 beta on 7.10 too, but I didn't get this behavior.

A workaround is to go to System Settings/Appearance/GTK Styles and fonts and Set: Use another style - QtCurve. This eliminates the firefox rendering bug and many other issues like sliders are chopped off at the bottom, etc.

As far as I understand the problem is that Hardy uses QtCurve as the default KDE theme. However Hardy does not use QtCurve's Gtk2 engine, preferring to style Gtk2 apps via the Qt engine. QtCurve doesn't look that great when done this way - certainly nowhere near as good as its native Gtk2 port.

I solved this issue by installing the package gtk2-engines-qtcurve.

In addition, I had to select QtCurve for "use another style" in "GTK Styles and Fonts" of the System Settings.

Here is a very small ogg video clip that shows the behavior.

Hi,

Using Kubuntu latest Hardy update, I have this problem too. But definitely is solved installing gtk2-engines-qtcurve like Alejandro Díaz-Caro Said.

Cheers.

I can confirm the problem and fix (gtk2-engines-qtcurve), also on latest Kubuntu.

This problem also occurs in other GTK applications, such as UFRaw.

I too can also confirm that Alejandro Diaz-Caro's workaround does indeed work. Thanks!

OK, well... that worked for me too... but really, what's the solution here? A user should not have to figure this stuff out, and I have to figure that if anyone tested this, it would have been completely obvious. What's the problem here and where is the solution?

I would like to add to this that it is not a great solution. After changing this setting, GTK apps now use a larger font size than I want. I'd turned that down some after initial installation (Thunderbird's toolbar is far too wide on my screen with the default size), but with the "Other Theme" box selected, the font size is ignored.

Played with the some more... a lot of interesting problems lurking in different places.

First off, I tried setting my KDE font sizes all to 8. One of them, when using the gtk2-engines-qtcurve solution, DOES fix the font sizes in GTK apps. What it does not appear to do is fix the size of text boxes that use those fonts. If the font size is 8, the entry box (like Firefox location and search bars) will just have white space around the text like a cushion to keep the bar the same size. This is not the case using the "Use KDE theme" selections. Also, when using QtCurve, the KDE colors do not come through. Pidgin normally has striping that alternates for every user name in the list. With QtCurve, the background appears to be all white.

Lastly, the dialog to configure GTK options is confusing. I'm speaking about in kde-system-settings. If you end up configuring one of the options that apparently matches KDE, it will let you apply those settings, but the radio button will revert to the KDE setting when you come back in (eg. if you pick other theme or other font size, but the theme is Qt or the font size matches your KDE font). It took me a bit to figure out why that was, and I'm not sure if that's the right behavior (though that's certainly outside the scope of this bug).

I encountered the same problem, but installing gtk2-engines-qtcurve didn't help me... neither does switching GTK engine to Qt. If I set GTK engine to Raleigh the problem is gone.
