/usr/X11R6/bin/firefox prints and error and exits

the x11-common package provides this link:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 2007-10-11 16:31 /usr/X11R6/bin -> ../bin

If /usr/X11R6/bin is ahead of /usr/bin in the path (yes, I know, not required, but it should still work), then running firefox on the command line fails:

$ firefox
cd: 129: can't cd to ../lib/firefox
/usr/X11R6/bin/firefox: 184: /usr/X11R6/bin/run-mozilla.sh: not found
Exit 127

/bin/sh is apparently doing something counterintuitive with cd (maybe this is an sh bug?):

$ cd /usr/X11R6/bin
$ ls -ld ../lib/firefox ../lib/firefox/firefox
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 2007-10-18 19:04 ../lib/firefox
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5257 2007-10-18 19:04 ../lib/firefox/firefox
$ cd ../lib/firefox
cd: 3: can't cd to ../lib/firefox

The directory is clearly accessible, but cd doesn't work in this case. bash does not have this problem.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. I tried the Hardy Heron live CD. However, my bug was reported against firefox 2.x, and the live CD includes firefox 3.x. I did try running firefox 3.0 with /usr/X11R6/bin first in my path, and that worked OK, so firefox 3.0 does not have the same bug.

The sh behavior I demonstrate above does still exist.

I then uncommented universe in /etc/apt/sources.list and installed firefox-2. This fails in exactly the same way as I reported in October, and continues to fail today on a fully updated Gutsy system. This bug still needs to be fixed in main for Gutsy and universe for Hardy.

If its still a bug in ffox 2 then it won't be fixed

firefox 3 however was reported to be fixed
