Backport finalrd to bionic

Bug #1830211 reported by Dimitri John Ledkov on 2019-05-23
This bug affects 1 person
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
finalrd (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Finalrd is a utility that allows to integrate shutdown hooks with systemd-shutdown pivot-root functionality.

In cosmic and up this has proven to allow integrating shutdown hooks that resolve various unclean or delayed shutdown issues.

Specifically mdadm Intel Matrix raid unclean or hung shutdown issues.
In a public cloud with iscsiroot executing logout on the remote server.

[Test Case]

CPC team to run their tests and see if the 30 second shutdown delay is still present on PV hosts for bionic.

[Regression Potential]

By itself it is inert, and generates a basic shutdown initrd usable with systemd-shutdown. It's upto the integration packages to ship finalrd hooks and start depending on finalrd. Thus introducing finalrd alone in bionic, will not cause changes in shutdown behaviour.

Hello Dimitri, or anyone else affected,

Accepted finalrd into bionic-proposed. The package will build now and be available at in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from verification-needed-bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed-bionic. In either case, without details of your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at . Thank you in advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s) fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in -proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

needs verification. I.e. install finalrd on a system with raid1, install an mdadm finalrd hook (ie. pull in new mdadm from a later release) and ensure that finalrd is used when shutting down and shuts down fine.

Dimitri John Ledkov (xnox) wrote :

the CPC test case can only happen, once the open-iscsi hook is backported too. Hence above is verifcation for finalrd alone.

$ dpkg-query -W finalrd
finalrd 3~ubuntu18.04.0

And reboots continue to work just fine. It's ok to ship finalrd in bionic, as standalone package.

Note to SRU members: the Test Case on the bug is a bit incorrect, as the 30s delay test should only be performed later, after finalrd is landed and the iscsi changes backported. Accepting current verification instead.
