Can you please provide the steps you took and possibly the file you are trying to open to reproduce this error. I was unable to reproduce it from downloading a random .war file from the Internet.

I have the same problem. Whenever I try to open any war files with the archive manager, I only get the following error message.

"Could not open "FILE_NAME.war"

Archive type not supported."

It happens after I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10, and I didn't have it when I used 11.04.

If I change the extension from war to zip, it works.

hello I have the same problem, too.
This error occours after upgrade to 11.10.

filer-roller doesn't recognize war extension (there are no problems with ear and jar extensions).
Icon of war file is the generic icon, and not the file-roller icon.

If I change extension from war to zip, ear or jar extension icon change and I'm able to open archive.

Steps followed.

1. open the war file by double-clicking
2. error

3. open the file by right-click and choose the archive manager.
4. error

5. change the extension from war to zip then open it.
6. no problem

Yes, it's a big problem, the only way to open it is rename war file or extract archive with jar. There's another problem, too: if war file is contained into an ear archive there's no way to open or rename it...

This is clearly a bug and not a wish! It used to work and there is no
reason it shouldn't continue to do so. If it can open ear and jar it should
clearly open war as well.

It is a very annoying bug for the Java web application developers, the students who are studying Java web application development and the teachers who need to mark their assignments.
I don't think we are asking something luxury to have. It is indeed fundamental.

Because I never crossed the .war format before and the bug description was very poorly done, it seemed to be a feature request to add a new format support to file-roller, fixing the settings now that it got properly described in comment

Well, I'm not sure what else we can report about it though, as it's simply a working function in Natty doesn't work after upgrading to Oneiric.
Oh, come to think of it, those who have upgraded from Natty to Oneiric seem to have this issue.
Let me test it with my laptop which has pure Oneiric installed. I haven't really used it as Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10 have power consumption bugs.

Sure I could have, but we receive lot of bugs reports and don't have the ressources to do a proper job to reply to each and every one, the poorly described just tend to fall to the bottom, we do notice bugs with activity or duplicates though, which happened to this one after a few comments, seems to have worked pretty much fine, there is no reason to focus on the initial poor description or the triaging which matched it, bugs reports are dynamics and this one got adjusted when its quality improved

Not sure what info would be useful out of code debugging, what mimetype is displayed by the nautilus properties for you on the example?

Same problem here. This is absolutely fundamental to my day job, and is something I took for granted.

As an aside, File Roller is great for detecting and opening all sorts of files even if they don't have a logical (i.e. a known archive format) extension. It seems this functionality has been sadly lost.

Definitely a regression which needs fixing asap, as Ubuntu is used primarily as a development platform by many.

I'm sorry if you felt offended due to my previous comments. I didn't mean it and do understand what you said and believe all of us here do since most of us who are begging for this feature are developers.
What we were not so satisfied was, I guess, without any words, its importance became wishlist. Possibly we felt like we were ignored.
I'm not sure if it was entirely poorly described. Well, it probably was but we or at least, I had no idea what could be included to help you decide what causes the bug as I didn't do anything special but double-clicking on the file after upgrading from Natty to Oneiric.

I've never seen the file-roller fails to open a war file before unless the file is corrupted. As you know, it is just a zip file.

Anyway, my nautilus says its MIME type is 'application/x-webarchive'.

I've tried "grep -r '-war' /usr/share/mime", but it seems to take forever to process it.
So I did "grep -r '[.]war' /usr/share/mime" instead and got the following result.

/usr/share/mime/packages/kde.xml: <glob pattern="*.war"/>
/usr/share/mime/application/x-webarchive.xml: <glob pattern="*.war"/>
/usr/share/mime/globs:application/x-webarchive:*.war
/usr/share/mime/globs2:50:application/x-webarchive:*.war

and "grep -r '[.]war' ~/.local" gave me the following result (I excluded binary ones).

kdelibs5-data is required for kate and kompare.

After removing kdelibs5-data and double-clicking on a war, I got an error message box saying

Could not display "file name"
There is no application installed for application/x-webarchive type files

It has two buttons which are "Select Application" and "OK"

I clicked "Select Application" and selected "Archive Manager". It opens the war file without any problem.
However, I need "kate" and "kompare" so installed these again and the problem is back again.

Is there any way to have these tools without having any problem with opening war files?

I removed completely kdelibs5-data and all dependent apps using the Synaptic Package Manager and now I can open war files as well.

FYI: after doing this a lot of files in "/usr/share/mime/packages" directory was removed (the most of them).

I'm having the same annoying problem but I've never installed any kde packages.

Nautilus displays application/x-extension-war as mimetype for war files but it's not mapped in any mime files under /usr/share/mime/packages

I've tryed adding the following to the freedesktop file without success
