Bug Description

Binary package hint: file-roller

Themes downloaded from for example art.gnome.org won't open by Archive Manager (apparently this is 'file-roller'?). This happens on both my computers, with Ubuntu 9.04 freshly installed; no updates so far have solved this and it's a common function. I've tried downloading similar files from other sites with the same results.

Neither do these files work in the same way as with 8.10 where you can just dump them into the Themes box in System > Appearances. There is a message about not being able to extract them, so perhaps it's some package that is common to both Archive Manager and the Themes software and possibly not file-roller. I've tried this enough times on both machines to know it's not about rogue corrupt files.

Quickly solved by you, I imagine. Good luck.
Thanks.

This is what it says if I double-click on one of these tar.gz files:

tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

thank you for your bug report, are you sure the website is no having buggy themes?

Yes, there is no problem with the commonly used website itself, which I used before with 8.10, and I also tried tar.gz files elsewhere on other sites with the same result to verify this.

Although this is not a security matter, I do think it's not an unimportant one, because everyone uses Archive Manager at some point, and we're all in Ubuntu land prone to honing our desktop appearance, often involving these tar.gz files and art.gnome.org is a 'first port of call' it seems.

Thanks.

could you add an example there?

Any of the window borders from the page below produce the result I get, except Agatha, which is a tar.bz2 file.

After downloading them try to open them with a double-click or drop them into the theme box via System > Appearances > Themes

Oddly I've found this morning some of these files that I'd forgotten I had on a pen drive, and these copies oddly _do_ work, even though they're from the same site. Maybe that is a clue for you? I haven't done anything odd though, nothing to corrupt any files, so hopefully you get the same results as me....

This is the other site that made me sure art.gnome.org wasn't at fault:

I have just tried the same using the live CD (a CD verified as free from defects) with the same results, so it's definitely a bug rather than any installation problems. Would be pleased to hear that the team have found the same results. Thanks.

The issue is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug the to the people writting the software (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME)

I cannot reproduce this, could you attach an example to the report?

It transpires that the problem is to do with the mobile broadband that many of us now use. Its compression methods are what mangled the files, though I have now moved from Vodafone ot T-mobile with none of the symptoms.

You can close the bug I filed. Thanks.
