Bug Description

In addition, there is a black band under the top menu that is about the size of the menu. The system is virtually unusable.

This looks like it could very well be a symptom of https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/963093 in the unity update

I did the 'unity --reset' command and my display is back to normal.
