Bug Description
Binary package hint: xorg
I use a laptop as my primary machine. About 70% of the time it's connected to an external monitor. The rest of the time I use it on its own.
I've always had problems switching between the two. Prior to the Natty upgrade, if I switched from the monitor to the laptop and then unplugged the machine, the display would turn off and I couldn't get it back without doing a hard reset.
Since the Natty upgrade, the problems have gotten worse. The plugging/unplugging issue persists (though sometimes I can get the screen back by unplugging/
But another problem has cropped up. Since upgrading to Natty, when switching between displays, the screen will just freeze. I can still see everything, sometimes even move my mouse around, but the system doesn't respond to any clicking or keyboard strokes. My only option is to power down the machine and restart it.
This happens when switching—I turn one display off and the other one on. I can sometimes avoid this issue by turning on both displays at the same resolution first, applying the changes, and then going back and turning off the second one. But that's not failproof either.

Hey craig-zheng,
You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.
If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
close it.)
If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.
