Bug Description

New installation of the fglrx driver causes the plymouth splash screen and the included cryptroot password prompt to not appear at the next boots. Workaround: remove "quiet splash vt.handoff=7" from GRUB command line.

To reproduce, install Ubuntu 11.04 on a system with AMD graphics, and encrypt the root partition. Do not install fglrx. Confirm that booting works. Now, install fglrx via the GNOME proprietary drivers tools and reboot. See that the prompt disappears.

Workaround: as above.

Hey matthias-andree,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

I'm not upgrading just to see if someone got around to fixing the bug in
a new release while the old release is still supported -- the Desktops
in Ubuntu are going in the wrong direction.

Thanks for the workaround. Just an additional note about it: In 15.04 (vivid) this only works when booting using "upstart" (not with the new default "systemd"). Besides, the lines "load_video" and "gfxmode" have to be removed from grub.cfg (or the script "10_linux" that generates it), too.
