package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu5 failed to uninstall: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2

fglrx stopped working after upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04
fglrx was partially removed (no longer used as graphics driver) with:
'sudo apt-get remove --purge xorg-driver-fglrx fglrx*'
 allowing installation of open source ati graphics driver which is working,
however the synaptic package manager is now effectively broken since it always tries to remove fglrs first, fails and quits without doing anything else.
'sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*' also fails to remove fglrx.
I am about to do a complete re-installation of 10.04 from CD, which should fix the problem.
