package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 10

After a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04.1 and up-to-date system I opened "Hardware Drivers" to install ATI proprietary drivers. After "activation" it started to download the driver but failed with message : "SystemError: installArchives() failed". I also noticed in synaptic that fglrx* packages were installed. But when I rebooted there was just a purple screen even though the sound of login screen was loud and clear
