Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

GDM doesn't show up anymore at startup. I can switch to TTY1, and then login manually and running "startx" isn't a problem and everything works well.
But I don't have any graphical login screen.
The logs are in the report.

I also get a segfault while running "X -configure" :
_XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to open socket for inet6
_XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for inet6/enfants:0
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to open listener for inet6

Your xorg.conf looks like it wasn't generated by aticonfig. Try if running this as root fixes the problem:

aticonfig --initial -f

Thanks for your reply.
I updated xorg.conf but it didn't solved the problem.

What I did :
After startup, I ran "ps -fe | grep X" and found the parameters used to launch X at startup since X was still running.
I killed the X process and then I launched it again with the same parameters (as root) and logged the messages into a file (X.log.auto). Then the screen stayed black a few minutes until I decided to kill it again from TTY1.
Then I ran "startx", which works pretty well (using the SAME configuration file) and I logged the messages into another file (X.log.manu).

I also added the diff of these two files.

Your Xorg.log.auto looks OK. Xorg.log.manu looks incomplete, like the output of the Xserver on the console it was started from. Either way, there is no more crash or segault.

The black screen when you start X without any clients connecting to the Xserver is normal.

As far as I can tell, the Xserver and graphics driver are working now. Not sure why GDM is still not working. Can you reboot, let GDM fail, reboot again into recovery mode and grab copies of /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old? If the Xserver is still crashing with GDM, these log files will show it.

I don't see anything wrong with the log files. X starts, apparently in the monitor's native resolution (1920x1080). Then there is a VT switch and finally it looks like a clean shutdown. No evidence of a crash. What exactly are the symptoms of the problem you're observing now?

The only unexpected thing is the VT switch. Did you switch VT before copying the log files?

The segfault only happens when I run "X -configure" to create another xorg.conf file. But I don't need to run this command anymore since the xorg.conf seems good now.
The problem I have right now is that when I start the computer, GDM doesn't show up even after a few minutes.

At this point I see no evidence of a driver bug. Is the problem reproducible after uninstalling fglrx? If yes, it's definitely not a bug in fglrx.
