Bug Description

Übersetzung: Deutsch » Englisch - Google

Under "Ubuntu 8:10" (Standard installation) flickering videos when the desktop effects (Compiz).

This is like an overlay error.
The video is compulsively in the foreground window but not the player.

You can see this if you want a different window on the video pushing wants.

In full with Death is this effect by moving the mouse (call interface) executable.

Even in games does this occur,
In full of wine, it is even completely unusable (might have to tuhen).

The worst bug is on the flickering, however.

My PC:
Ubuntu 8:10 Beta standard unchanged
AMD ATI Radion x1250 (driver of Ubuntu automatically)
2 GB of RAM - 300GB HDD

AMD Chibsatz

No manual changes from me

Fresh install of Intrepid, using fglrx from the Restricted Drivers Manager and Compiz results in flickering video in all media players tried, with all outputs tried as well (VLC, MPlayer, Totem, with Xv, X11, GL).

I solved this problem in Hardy by editing Xorg.conf, but I'm hesitant to do so now that the use of Xorg.conf has changed in Intrepid (might mess up auto-configuration features).

This should probably be merged with this bug as well: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/289940, even though the bug cites a specific application, it makes mention of all 3D apps and video.

Correction: video does not flicker in Mplayer or VLC using X11 video output.

Still, this doesn't except the fact that using GL or Xv output causes flickering.

I have an ATI Radeon HD2870 - using Ubuntu 8.10 64bit. With restricted drives (and regardless of Compiz on or off) I get the flickering too.

VLC in X11 and Mplayer both still causes flickering here. Turning off restricted drivers and it's ok.

Same problem here

ATI x1250
Intrepid 64 bit
Compiz enabled

This bug wasn't here in hardy for videos, although some games flickered there too

Additional confirmation. Flickering stops if desktop effects are disabled.
Also note that when manually manipulating the "cube" desktop effect (if enabled and using keyboard-mouse combination to manually rotate) the desktop triangles (i.e. one of the two triangles used to draw the rectangular desktop background) will also flicker. However, its flickering is between visibility and invisibility, whereas video usually flickers black or white (black I think, but I'm not at my desktop).

Also, this is filed against the open source -ati driver, but in the comments people are discussing only the -fglrx driver. Zecky, are you using -fglrx or -ati? Please attach your Xorg.0.log and the output of lspci -vvnn.

Same problem here too using the -ati (restricted) driver on both hardy and intrepid. With compiz desktop effects disable video is fine, only flickers when compiz desktop effects are enabled
