Bug Description
1)
$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release: 8.10
3) A login window.
4) Nothing. I need to reboot manualy and select recovery version via grub. Then I selected the first option of the recovery menu ('resue' I think). After a few seconds, the system loading is done, hte screen turns black (like when it loads the login window, but without a 'waiting' mouse). Then a error window appears telling me that the X serveur doesn't load successfully.
The log is (only the part with errors) :
(II) loading /usr/lib/
(II) module dri : vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 7.10, module=1.0.0
ABI class:X.Org Serverur Extension, version 0.3
(EE) module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (1)
(II) UnloadedModule:
(II) Unloading /usr/lib/
(EE) Failed to load module "dri" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
(==) Matched ati for the autoconfigured driver
(==) Assiged te driver to the xf86ConfigLayout
(II) LoadModule:"ati"
I tried with the default xorg.conf and a "more complet one". Same resutls.
For information I've a ati radeon 9550.

I have exactly the same problem,
I also tried the fglrx and vesa drivers and it does the same.
So perhaps it doesn't concern xserver- xorg-video- ati but a more generic package.
I've a ATI X600.
