2014-03-12 15:22:19 Robert Hooker description I am not sure if this qualifies as a bug. I took our computer downstairs to a workbench to put an SSD in and re-install the OS. On my bench downstairs I use an old CRT monitor, and I think that is the issue. 14.04 worked after installing via a usb. I added the proprietary drivers (a couple of times, through the apt-get packages and the additional software dialouge.) Every time I installed the ATI drivers, the monitor would blank out and turn off when the unity greeter screen came up. I could still switch to a terminal (ctrl-alt-f1) and try to fix things. I think the problem is that after installing the fglrx packages (either fglrx or fglrx updates) the resolution or refresh rate go to something the (old) workbench monitor does not support. If it matters, I did run 'amdconfig --initial' before rebooting. After re-installing the ati drivers a few times, it occured to me that the resolution was the issue. I was able to log in to unity, pull up a terminal and reboot by entering the appropriate keystrokes. So I think that X was working. I took the box back upstairs, and it seems to be fine. So as a low-priority bug, it appears that 14.04 may not work well with older monitors.
