As the page you linked to says, you need to downgrade the X server to use the Legacy driver with Ubuntu 13.04. The makson96 PPA offers a way to do that, but you do not have it installed (and it's not officially supported or recommended by Ubuntu to downgrade critical packages like that). As such, I'm marking this bug a duplicate. Thanks.

Hi Daniel. That's exactly what I did when I upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 - used the makson96 PPA. That worked for 12.10 but it didn't work for 13.04. So are you saying there is no way I can use ubuntu 13.04 with my laptop then? I don't care what driver I use as long as I can see my screen! If I can't get 13.04 to work I'll have to go back to 12.10, which would be a shame.

I reinstalled ubuntu 12.04 LTS in the end. The display is fine there.
