fglrx kernel module didn't build. Do you have linux-headers-generic package installed?

affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → fglrx-installer (Ubuntu)
Robert Roth (evfool)
affects: fglrx-installer (Ubuntu) → unity (Ubuntu)

Daniel Letzeisen (dtl131) wrote :

@Robert: this is not really a Unity problem. The user is trying to use fglrx/Catalyst and it is not installed properly, so there's no 3D acceleration available. Normally, Unity falls back to software 3D (llvmpipe) in such a case, but llvmpipe (or any open-source 3D driver) will not work correctly if a proprietary video driver is installed.

affects: unity (Ubuntu) → fglrx-installer (Ubuntu)
Changed in fglrx-installer (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

Hi,

Thanks for your quick response. Would have checked things out quicker but life gets in the way sometimes.
Would have thouth linux-headers-generic would have been installed as part of the build from the iso?
Checked through synaptic. linux-headers generic not installed so installed and rebooted into ubuntu.
Still no task bar/unity.
Only able to select anything on desktop, not able to switch between applications (alt/tab)
ctrl/alt/f1 and stopped/started lightdm back into gnome-panel(no effects) to check synaptic and update this log.
linux-headers-generic ok in synaptic
Have also tried switching driver (Software Sources/Additional drivers) but still not working.
motherboard is GA-55M-DS2 with onboard Radeon graphics which I think is model 6410

Try reinstalling fglrx package now that headers are installed
sudo apt-get purge fglrx-updates fglrx-amdcccle
sudo apt-get install fglrx
Then, reboot.

OK, bad news still no good.
install of fglrx came back with already there, probrably from when I tried switching over to another driver in #4 above.
Re-installed via synaptic and re-booted.
No good
Purged fglrx-updates fglrx-amdcccle fglrx and installed amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.1-linux-x86.x86_64 which I had previously downloaded. Still no good.
I have a legacy version, amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.1-legacy-linux-x86.x86_64 which I am willing to try.

So when you run 'sudo apt-get install fglrx' via the command line, does it report a build error?

Update:-
Three Ubuntu builds
1) 12.04 Working fine except Evolution which has been updated in 12.10 and is not backwards compatible.
2) 12.10, updated from a 12.04 build.
3) 12.10 Clean install from .iso
Neither 12.10 builds have a working unity/ task bar. Task bar only visable when gnome-panel installed and selected at logon.
Checked and installed linux-headers-generic and fglrx and both installed

Terry, the 12.10 Clean install from .iso is the most interesting one. How did you install fglrx on there?

Dave,
On the clean install:-
1) From the desktop, no Unity / task bar, ctrl/alt/f1 to login and install gnome-panel & synaptic. Would not let me install fglrx as "part of another package"
2) Restarted lightdm in gnome-panel.
3) Using synaptic, installed all updates, which included a refresh of ubuntu-drivers-common, which include fglrx and a newer kernal. Also installed the packages I commonly use from the repository
4) Rebooted into ubuntu - no unity / taskbar
5) Using synaptic, re-installed fglrx, installed linux-headers-generic. Using software-control, installed ubuntu-restricted-extras. Reguired update of software sources to do this. Still no unity / task bar

OK, I think I've got a cause, but not a solution as yet.

I've just installed 13.04 onto a new partition, with a new, seperate /home - I'll call it Temp-home(TH) to save typing
On previous installs of Ubuntu, I use an existing seperate /home, I'll call it PH to save typing.
When 13.04 starts using TH, Unity works and I get a status bar.
When I add PH to /etc/fstab, Unity does'nt work and status bar is missing.
Take PH out of /etc/fstab and Unity/status bar are fine.
Not enough room to merege PH into TH.
Looks like there's something within PH that's conflicting and stopping Unity/ status bar from appearing.

OK, Unity / status bar problem resolved in both 12.10 and 13.04
Solution:-
From 12.10(gnome-panel) copied all files from TH to PH, and re-booted. Unity/status bar are back on both 13.04 and 12.10.
Got some tuning to do on 13.04, currently using X.Org X server driver, but all looking good so far

Might be cause of https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/227657
