Bug Description

Installing fglrx or fglrx-updates succeeds, but I'm still stuck with only the radeon Xorg driver loaded (and fully functional).

Xorg.0.log shows that it can't load fglrx no matter what I do:
[ 1.816] (==) Matched fglrx as autoconfigured driver 0
[ 1.816] (==) Matched ati as autoconfigured driver 1
[ 1.816] (==) Matched fglrx as autoconfigured driver 2

[ 1.816] (==) Matched vesa as autoconfigured driver 4
[ 1.816] (==) Matched modesetting as autoconfigured driver 5
[ 1.816] (==) Matched fbdev as autoconfigured driver 6
[ 1.816] (==) Assigned the driver to the xf86ConfigLayout
[ 1.816] (II) LoadModule: "fglrx"
[ 1.816] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module fglrx
[ 1.816] (II) UnloadModule: "fglrx"
[ 1.816] (II) Unloading fglrx
[ 1.816] (EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (module does not exist, 0)

BOTH kernel modules are loaded:
$ lsmod | grep fgl
fglrx 4715211 0
$ lsmod | grep radeon
radeon 895653 3
ttm 83595 1 radeon
drm_kms_helper 46784 1 radeon
drm 275528 5 radeon,ttm,drm_kms_helper
i2c_algo_bit 13413 1 radeon

And yes, the package really is installed:
ii fglrx 2:9.000-0ubuntu3 amd64 Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators
ii fglrx-amdcccle 2:9.000-0ubuntu3 amd64 Catalyst Control Center for the AMD graphics accelerators

But still, I find:
$ glxinfo | grep OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD CEDAR
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 9.0
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30
OpenGL extensions:

Does this mean my Radeon HD 5450/6350 is no longer supported? If so, then why has there not been a single error or log message saying so?

You have to run:
sudo amdconfig --initial -f
after you install the fglrx-* packages.

If it still doesn't work you might need to additionally run this:
sudo amdconfig --px-dgpu

The bug is not incomplete. It's quite well defined now.

A fix should involve configuring everything automatically as part of the driver installation.

Incomplete practically means: additional information is needed.
When there is a request in order to triage the issues, the status goes to "Incomplete" till the answer arrives.

Please provide the information requested in order to make the resolution of this bug faster.

There's plenty of information in the above comments. No more is needed.

We need the operation of the original poster in order to triage a bug,
work for a solution and test when actually one is found.
If you don't have the intention to help on that, then I'll have to
mark the bug as Invalid.

I hope you understand
Nikos

I do understand the triage process very well. And no, once a bug is adequately triaged, it does not require further information from the reporter. But you should let Alberto (the driver maintainer) decide that.

If a possible solution is found, the reporter should check it and report back, no?

> But you should let Alberto (the driver maintainer) decide that
I don't think that any bug should be automatically assigned to the maintainer of the package if (s)he has not stated any intention that (s)he is working on that, no?

Multiple possible solutions have been found allowing for a proper fix to be implemented, hence Triaged. And there are no unanswered questions posed in the above comments, hence not Incomplete.

Yes, if you want a bug to be visible to the maintainer it does not hurt to assign it to them. There is a difference between a bug being assigned and in progress. It is not in progress so there is no implication (yet) that anyone is working on it or will.

"sudo amdconfig --initial -f" should not be necessary as we automatically load proprietary drivers without requiring a xorg.conf.

Furthermore, the Fglrx's alternative should override Mesa's unless the alternative was manually set to the latter.

Can you please reproduce the problem and attach the output of the following command?

update-alternatives --display x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf

@Andrew: for some reason the radeon kernel module was loaded (and this prevents fglrx from loading). How did you install the fglrx driver?

Also please try the following:

sudo update-alternatives --set x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf /usr/lib/fglrx/ld.so.conf
sudo ldconfig -n

sudo update-initramfs -u

Then finally reboot, and attach the new /var/log/gpu-manager.log

After these commands, load the operating system stays on "ubuntu". I loaded recovery and did
sudo apt-get update, upgrade
After that system loaded normally, and fglrx driver was installed successfully

I'm in the same situation, with Ubuntu 14.04.3 and fglrx-updates.

Tried the instructions in comment #18 but did not change anything. The log file is attached. Also tried removing and reinstalling fglrx, to no effect.

Problems seemingly started when I booted without the GPU (using Intel iGPU) to test hardware and again with the GPU. Before that fglrx was working fine.
