video overlay problems, overlay doesn't show, or unshow

not sure if i should report this, since i can't reproduce reliably.
Screen is frozen on last frame of video, or video fails to play.
Switching to linux console and back to X11 seems to unfreeze the display.

mouse pointer still shows when the overlay has crashed.
