Bug Description

Using my Samsung Chronos 7 700z3a-S03-DE ( http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/NP700Z3A-S03DE ) laptop with fglrx-installer-updates in 12.10, Unity failed to load, booting into a low graphics mode. It worked with Ubuntu 12.04 and fglrx-installer from the repositories.

I have also tried:
+ fglrx-installer
+ latest AMD Catalyst drivers from the AMD website (12.9, 12.10, 12.11 beta)
+ PPA from Nick Andrikos https://launchpad.net/~andrikos/+archive/ppa/+packages?field.name_filter=&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=quantal
+ https://launchpad.net/~makson96/+archive/fglrx?field.series_filter=quantal

davorao, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please execute the following as it will attach helpful debugging information in a terminal:
apport-collect -p linux 1074494

Thank you for your understanding.

Opened bug task linux (Ubuntu) for ease of attachment collection. Will delete task once apport-collect complete.

Hi Christopher,

i tried using the command you suggested in order to get more info on my bug (apport-collect -p linux 1074494), but have failed to do so since im stuck in non graphical environment and can not authorize the requested apport collect. At least i didn't manage to input the URL for launchpad in order to authorize in the browser.
Would it make sense to do this on a fresh install or is that then not the correct info for the bug collect?

Cheers,
Davor

davorao, could you please do so in a Precise live environment via http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/ ?

Hi Christopher,

do you mean i should try to generate a report from the terminal (apport-collect -p linux 1074494)
via the live environment (precise 12.04)? Is it necessary to use precise or can i also do this in a quantal live usb?

Would it be helpful if i do an install of precise and send the test reports?

Either Precise or Quantal, live or installed, is fine.

Hi Christopher,

i had tried this a couple of ways, and haven't been able to make it work. It all brings me to the same end result; which is booting into a low graphics mode desktop.

1.) Tried the xserver-xorg-video-intel package from the ppa with the repository fglrx package
2.) Tried the xserver-xorg-video-intel package from the ppa with the latest AMD Catalyst drivers from their website
3.) Tried both the xserver-xorg-video-intel package from the ppa in conjunction with the fglrx package from the ppa

All of these failed.

Hi Christopher,

i tried also the legacy drivers which revert your X.org stack to 1.12 and use the AMD Catalyst 12.6 drivers (with this PPA), but sorry to say that this also produced the same result. A desktop that boots into low graphics mode.

davorao, thank you for testing the requested PPA. It was recently brought to my attention that if one had not installed the PPA xserver-xorg-video-intel as well as the PPA fglrx-installer, the WORKAROUND may not work.

Hence, if you do not mind, could you please test a WORKAROUND following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#WORKAROUND ?

The new instructions attempt to prevent this ambiguity in the future.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Christopher,

i followed the steps of your workaround and came to the same result. A low graphics mode desktop.

But i think the problem may not be in the drivers but the configuration itself since even when i purge the drivers it still keeps booting me into a low graphics mode desktop. Is there a command i need to run in order to reset X.org or something else that I am missing?

If i can submit a bug report on this i would i just don't know where to start.
