sorry, but I cannot reproduce this neither on current i386 Sid nor i386 Oneiric.
amd64 should not get a build anyways.

BTW, it ftbfs for another reason (it tries to call gcc with --as-needed), but that's not the report here.

Your log misses "-lm -ldl" at the very end of the command line. This is passed as LIBS to configure in debian/rules.

I'd like to close it here, as (from my POV) your bug is not a bug (and upload a fix for the other ftbfs asap)
