Bug Description

Binary package hint: f-spot

Our default photo application, lacks caching when watching photos. It would be nice if the next image would appear instantly, without redrawing, just like in gqview (which should be used as a reference in speed).

It is important, as users use cameras that produce very large (e.g. 10MP) images.

Upstream bug contains a patch for this (which needs to be updated though).

IMHO it shouldn't be considered as a new feature, but lack of this cache is rather a bug. This slowness is visible to a major part of users which uses f-spot. It's a severe usability failure, at least for me.

I agree with this being severe. It is awful trying to show your family a slideshow of photos, and makes Ubuntu look bad. The upstream patch is nearly there I think... the developers made some recent comments about wanting to get this bug fixed.

It affects also Eye of Gnome (eog), which is IMO more widely known and used app. I linked it by the "Also affects project", did I do it right?

Yes, I am waiting for background preloading of next image for a long time too.

Thanks a lot for reporting this, however since F-Spot is no longer a part of the default installation, this is no longer a paper cut. Btw, a bug report should only be filed against a single application, since there will typically be different development teams working on different apps, which means the bugs aren't likely to be fixed simultaneously, preventing us from drawing a line under the issue until they are all fixed.

I'm closing the EoG task here. If you are experiencing the same problem with it, then a new bug report should be opened.
