GNOME packages are calling update-desktop-database and update-mime-database everytime they add a file to those places. Apps rely on GIO (mostly) to get the required data, but GIO only reads the cache file, I think - and does not depend on desktop-files-utils.
Does KDE handle this automatically? Then why doesn't it detect GIMP's ability to edit images?
