Bug Description

Binary package hint: f-spot

I would like to suggest an alternative way to import photographs in F-spot: Instead of a 3-level structure based on date (year → month → day), why not one based on import rolls?

Each time a photo set is imported to F-spot, it could prompt you for a name for the roll and create a folder named like it. That would make the folder structure easier to navigate from a browser, and possibly more meaningful to the end user.

to be send upstream by someone interested on the feature, leaving this as incomplete for now.

A potential solution is maybe attached to upstream bug: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=329040

Hello,
I made a patch to give some solution to this TOO OLD bug (I'm the author of upstream proposed patch http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=329040#c11). I consider this bug a showstopper, but f-spot developers are clearly ignoring it (and A LOT of duplicates...), so I decided to propose my patch in the hope it can become at least an Ubuntu-only one (as per the import directory chooser, somehow superseded by my patch).
So in attach the patch suitable for a package rebuild. You can find binary packages in my PPA https://launchpad.net/~meden/+archive/ppa ; suggestion and patches are welcome.
As a side note, packages in the PPA also include the patch from http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=340903#c13 , which mitigates another f-spot long-standing showstopper (IMHO...) bug which causes EXIF time arbitrarily changed to UTC, leading to a (form of) data corruption if the option "Write metadata to files" is set (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=340903).
I hope to be useful.

Hello, refactored the patch proposed in #6, minimizing UI changes. I introduced an extension to manage the custom path and filename format, with a much stronger validation of pattern (and exception management... No more copy&paste programming...).
Updated packages in my PPA (for Karmic, by now, for Jaunty I hope soon).

Could you add your patches to upstream bugs too?

Well, actually I already did it, despite what I wrote... (the hope is the last to die, you know...).
BTW, patches against f-spot in my PPA fix an annoying bug and have some cleaning and improvements (see changelog for 0.6.1.5-0ubuntu2~[1,2]) but ATM I have no time to refresh them against git.
The first patch has been submitted upstream 1 year and half ago, completely refactored 3 months ago stripping off UI changes, but no one of developers wrote anything; I would be satisfied by a "This sucks", so at least I would stop to waste my time... OK, sorry for the rant.
Good holidays!
