Solved. After a day's effort searching for the cause I found it. In my desperate attempts to get the detailed thunar view working I tried the xubuntu-dev ppa. Unfortunately, it updated more files than I realised, and this was compounded by then adding xubuntu's proposed updates. Effectively, I'd ended up with a mish-mash of versions for various files.
ppa-purge corrected the updated packages then proposed updated the newly restored files.
ppa-purge has just moved to the top of my list of most useful tools.
