2008-07-13 23:20:13 Paddy description Binary package hint: xubuntu-docs When trying to copy to floppy, it says Abi file is write protected. When I drag the abi file onto the floppy icon, it says "permission denied. I tried to change permissions, but it would not allow me to change. This should be a simple process, but getting very frustrating. I saved the Abi file to the desktop and then tried to save it to the user folder, and it said folder was "write protected". NOTE: I saved the file as a microsoft DOC file, to be opened in XP later on. Binary package hint: xubuntu-docs When trying to copy to floppy, it says Abi file is write protected. I use xubuntu on slower computers such as athlon and celeron CPU's. On over a dozen of these computers, I cannot save an Abi word file to a floppy disk. What more information do you possibly need? Try it yourselves. Thank you.

These children need a simple way to save their files to a floppy drive, not using the command line, something similar to windows; save as .....to A:. And yes, the floppy was mounted. This problem seems to exist only in xubuntu. In Ubuntu 8.04, this is not a problem. Perhaps some code has been left out of xubunto that will solve this problem. PS: This is the only distro suited to older Athlon and Celeron machines. 600 - 900 MHZ

2008-12-11 17:56:39 Charlie Kravetz exo: statusexplanation I tried to reproduce this using Xubuntu Hardy Heron, 8.04.1. After inserting the floppy disk in the drive, if you do NOT double-click the icon on the desktop, the floppy disk does not mount and you cannot save to it. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunar-volman/+bug/199005 Double-clicking the icon on the desktop caused the floppy to be mounted. I could then save using AbiWord and using drag and drop from the desktop. Documents used were created in AbiWord and saved to my hard drive. I was able to do this using files saved as .abi (Abiword documents) and .doc (Microsoft Word) files. Since the floppy disk does not automount, it is necessary to mount the drive by double-clicking on it before you can save to it. NOTE: If you right-click on the floppy drive icon, left-click "eject volume", you must logout and login to use the floppy drive again. You also get an error: Unable to eject the volume, which is filed as a separate bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunar-volman/+bug/199005 $ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1 Release: 8.04 $ apt-cache policy abiword abiword: Installed: 2.4.6-3ubuntu3 Candidate: 2.4.6-3ubuntu3 Version table: *** 2.4.6-3ubuntu3 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/universe Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
