Evolution contact lists broken

I have been trying to create contact lists on Evolution Mail. I creat the list, all looks good, try to send an email and I get a message that there is a problem with an address, re-open the list and it's changed some of them to whing dings or symbols! Anyone help with this problem?

I now have the same problem. Creating a new contacts list ends up with gibberish entries, e.g. <email address hidden> becomes a sequence of 6 or 7 non-printable and non-ascii characters.

This _always_ happens when the address is added by
1. typing in the box below "Type and e-mail address ..." and selecting the matching name from the address book, or
2. drag-n-drop and existing contact into the contacts list area of the window

It does _not_ happen when
3. the address typed into the box below "Type and e-mail address ..." does _not_ match an existing contact, or
4. when the address is selected using the [Select..] button and the resulting Show Contacts pop-up and selector

My Evolution version is 3.2.2
