cannot auto applay filter on new message

1) in account preference, on option (3 tab) I flag : applay filter on new message ...
but filter start only manually if I select some message and then it ctrl-y
this account is a maildir/ type account (no single big file but one file for mail message in a folder structure)
2) on gmail a account this option is not present at all and I can only start filter manualli

is this a bug or I'm missing anything?
