Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution (in 6.10) freezes after installing a large account IMAP.
Once it freezes, it has to be force quit. Rebooting
and reloading (as the same user) returns the frozen
screen. Reinstalling evolution still returns you to
the frozen screen. Only if you log on as another
user do you get a new set-up menu and you can
start over again, as long as you don't try to set-up
the same IMAP account.

This happens only with dial-up connections (56k). I
am assuming it freezes when it is downloading my
large IMAP files and inbox. However, neither
Netscape nor Mozilla have a problem with this when
using dial-up.

This has been resolved. I was impatient. On
dial-up, it takes a while to load IMAP accounts
first time, and the window freezes while the
account loads. It takes a minute or two to load,
the first time. Thereafter it is faster, but the
window still seems frozen and partial (just
frames visible) during this time and will frighten
the newcomer.

Perhaps a little warning that dial-ups need to be
patient when loading IMAP accounts the first time
would be helpful.

Thank you for your bug, there is different bugs open upstream already about evolution freezing when network is slow or not responding

Thank you! Merci! Danke schoen.

I found that it doesn't freeze if you
let it download everything and not
try to do anything else in evolution.
It always takes about 3 - 4 minutes
to load all IMAP files and folders on
dialup.

I'm using ubuntu's 7.10 default evolution, with a gmail imap account.
evolution is extremely slow to load the emails, even when the headers are present.

using broadband connection (not dial up).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

Running from a terminal, while it's frozen there's a message like this every few seconds:

This seems to occur for every one of my many many imap folders, so I'm not sure if evolution is actually frozen, or just taking an incredible amount of time doing something. (To confirm, thunderbird works fine and quickly on the same IMAP account.)

It should be noted that this is on a high speed dsl, not even on dial-up.

Re-opening, since this does appear to still be an issue in intrepid, and the information requested has been provided.

I have exactly the same symptoms with Evolution for my POP account and 5Mbit Internet chanel.
Rebooting and reloding (as the same user) returns the frozen screen.
