Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

In Ubuntu Natty default config, Evolution's window cannot be made to fit into a "1024 x something" screen. If you try to reduce the window width, its minimum stays a bit wider than 1024. Even when "maximized" the window contents seem to be wider than screen.

That's EXTREMELY annoying as 1024 is the standard width for about all netbooks and many monitors that "used to be considered big" once upon a time...

+1 for this one. A real problem on my daughter's eeepc 701 which has a small screen which only goes to 800 pixels wide. This is a major regression

This bug is *NOT* a duplicate of bug #23810. Bug #23810 talks about a specific dialog window, this bug talks about Evolution main window.

Furthermore, bug #23810 is dated October, 2005 !! Is such a usability bug has stayed in Evolution for 6 years (!!!!) that would mean that Evolution is a piece of trash that wouldn't deserve being used.

It's been mentioned that the present bug is a *regression* so it cannot be a duplicate of a 5-years old bug.

The first start of Evolution was fine. At some point I increased the width of the left side pane (folder bar). Now I have the problem that the main windows does not fit anymore on my screen (1024x768). The folder bar resists to be scales smaller than 229 pixels. I've tried to change the value in gconf-editor (/apps/evolution/shell/view_defaults/folder_bar/width). But on every new start of Evolution the value is set back to 229 pixels. An the strange thing is that the overall width is alway 1027 (3pixels too wide) in /apps/evolution/shell/view_defaults/window_width . Manual changing in gconf-editor doesn't help. In the end these 3 pixels let the window jump with every click in Evolution from left to right an back. Very annoying. I didn't have this problem under Lucid Lynx. Now I'm working with a fresh install of Natty with all updates installed.

It's me again. It seems that the bug is also misunderstood in Gnome and Debian. THIS bug is not related to settings-dialogs (e.g. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=267787 ). THIS bug is related to the main window. This bug report seems to report something similar and points out that the locale may be the problem: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=608585 . I'm using DE. The question is: How can I scale the main window below 1024 pixels in width?

this is a duplicate of bug 23810. that bug is tracking an upstream report that is also talking about the main window, that being said that report is looking at the whole problem with evolution and those resolutions 1024x* 800x* etc. marking this as duplicate. And yes this bug has been around for a good while , patches are welcome in order to help the upstream folks to fix it. thanks.

@Pedro: I do not understand. The here reported bug was not present in Lucid. (Although the settings dialogs didn't fit as described in bug #23810 in Lucid.). I didn't use Maverick. But for me it seems that this bug was introduced in Natty. The bug #23810 is already there since 2005. For me it is difficult to understand the relation...

OK, I've check the values of the window size on one of my other machines running Lucid. I could easily change the WIDTH of the main window below 1000 pixels. The current values are:

/apps/evolution/shell/view_defaults/folder_bar/width -> 94 pixels

/apps/evolution/shell/view_defaults/width -> 877 pixels

=> This bug is not a duplicate of the 6 year old bug #23810 , because it was not there in Lucid.
