What is the status of networking in general? Please confirm whether there is an icon at the top right corner of your screen (usually) which indicates that you would be connected through wired (two arrows), or wireless (waves of some sort), or not connected. If you're connected, please make sure Evolution isn't set to Work Offline, which can be toggled from the "File" menu.
