Mails doesn't get opened; status bar indefinitely indicates "formatting message (...)"

Binary package hint: evolution
I have configured the mail client for an IMAP account. Its able to access IMAP and open mails. oftenly, it gets struck with a status bar message saying "Formatting Message (...)" forever. In this scenario no mails get opened (either locally stored mails or mails on IMAP server)
The only way is to forcefully quit the application
