Bug Description

I have completly removed evolution with the ubuntu synaptic package manager (and all associated pakages) to install thunderbird but after rebooting ubuntu (and before installing thunderbird) no taskbar were loaded. Several reboot have not changed anything. So I have re-installed ubuntu once again, do the same evolution uninstall and again, the same problem happened. I have not yet test a simple evolution uninstall (not completly) or uninstall only the main package.

I use Hardy Heron with all packages up-to-date (unfortunately I am not able to check the package version now)

Bests regards

Do you remember which packages removed?
Because there are some evolution packages that have dependencies with Gnome desktop.

I had the same problem when I uninstalled evolution. I had to re-install it for my gnome-desktop to work. Is there a way to find out what evolution files I need to keep (gnome-dependent) and what files I can uninstall?

It seems that Gnome-applet and Gnome-panel are marked for deletion when my wife chose complete deletion of Evolution. These are the two dependancies I had to reinstall, which isn't easy for her because I needed to go to console (CTRL+F2 didn't work anymore, etc.). I don't understand why these two dependancies are linked when deleting Evolution.

I chose complete deletion of Evolution (but I did not uninstall it) to look if the two Gnome packages were going to be deleted but I did not see anything abnormal. Is this bug already corrected ? I hesitate to validate the Evolution deletion to confirm it !

The same problem happened to me when I completely
uninstalled Evolution. (No taskbar, no fun ...)
I've also deleted some gnome files who caused the trouble ...

- First I had to reinstall Evolution by terminal.
The only way to do that seems to be pressing Alt Ctrl F2 ...

I thought: "That's it", but when I returned to desktop
with Alt Ctrl F7, the taskbar hadn't come back yet.

- Then, after I reinstalled gnome panel, also by terminal,
the problem was resolved.

Sorry for not remembering the exact commands
but ther is a way to find out - over here!

The solution on Intreped Ibex (and possibly most other Ubuntu releases) is:

{{{
apt-get install gnome-panel gnome-applets
}}}

Judging by the rdepends, removing evolution would cause a lot of problems. A lot of other packages, as seen above, whether correct or not, depend on this. I am not sure if the intention is to keep evolution as part of Ubuntu for the sake of newer users, but this is the way it is. I will mark this as Wishlist and change the title accordingly.
Thank you.
