Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command only once, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1978260

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Bug reporting is about finding & fixing problems thus preventing future users from hitting the same bug.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg. https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709

I observe the same issue. It looks like the autosaved messages are not removed when the email is discarded or sent.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Launch the Compose Message window by clicking New (Mail Message).

2. Compose an email

3. Wait for the draft to be autosaved. The ".evolution-composer.autosave-..." will appear in ~/.local/share/evolution.

4. Either send the email or discard the message by closing the Compose Message window and choose "Discard". The file ".evolution-compose.autosave-..." will not be removed.

5. Close Evolution.

6. Launch Evolution again. Evolution will ask "Do you want to recover unfinished messages? Evolution quit unexpectedly while you were composing a new message. Recovering the message will allow you to continue where you left off."

Just to raise awareness how awkward this can turn: When I open evolution it offers to "recover" all mail since the last start of the program, which can be dozens of editor windows of long gone/sent Mails. Each requires two clicks close and confirm to "discard". Any message that actually needs recovery is drowning among them. And definitely a change/regression agains the version shipped in Ubuntu 20.04. Yours, Steffen

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

Changed in evolution (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed

I confirm @sneumann's issue, same here on recently installed Ubuntu 22.04.

fwiw, I "solved" (sic) this by changing the os to Pop!_OS. Pop! has solved
many other issues with other apps.

This is probably a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/1983794

Upstream bug report was closed and is here https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/1972

I was also affected by this bug. It seems to be an issue with libcanberra-gtk3-module, which I had no real need for, so I was able to uninstall and it appears to have solved the problem.
