Bug Description

when I set evolution to synchronize contacts it just creates new contacts with the email as the name for MSN contacts. I have them in my contact list already in evolution and have the MSN field filled out with their MSN email, but it still creates a new contact. It should first check if the MSN or yahoo name already exist in one of the contacts and then synchronize the phone number and address but NOT the name that they put in their IM profile, oh and their birthday should be added if not filled in on the evolution contact.

Thanks for your report, Which version of Ubuntu and evolution are you using? Can you tell us a few easy steps in order to reproduce this behavior? thanks.

evolution 2.12.1 on ubuntu 7.10. to reproduce the behavior create a
contact that has the name and the IM address of the person at minimum
then (make sure they are on your contacts list in pidgin) and go into
preferences, under mail preferences on the automatic contacts tab enable
the second option and then click Synchronize with buddy list now. when
it has finished it will have a duplicate of the contact that you created
instead of just updating it with info from the IM profile.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Intrepid Ibex. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

since it is not a hardware issue, would it be okay to test intrepid live
cd on a vm, as livecds take forever to boot up.

I've just loaded the alpha 6 release iso into a vm and set it up with my
contacts and then I signed in to pidgin with my msn account. I then left
pidgin open and went back into evolution and into the options. I turned
on contact auto sync and then click sync now button and it still makes a
duplicate entry in the contact list. the contacts all have an msn and a
yahoo email and it matches what is in pidgin but it makes a new entry
with only their nickname and the email from msn or yahoo in pidgin. If
you need any screen-shots or other things let me know

how do you expect evolution to know that your contact in your addressbook and in pidgin are identic?

Oh i dont know, i guess it would via the msn or yahoo or aim field in an evolution contact and match that with the respective im service buddy and if they are both the same then just update contact info instead of creating a new entry.

how do you expect evolution to know that your contact in your
addressbook and in pidgin are identic?
