Bug Description

Users can't use cut and paste in Evolution's preview window.

Reproducible Steps:
* Launch Evolution
* Select the Mail button in the left side navigation bar
* Select an email. It will show in the preview window
* Select some text.
* Hit either ctrl+c or use the copy item from the Edit menu.
* Open gedit or something that can receive text
* Paste
>>>>> Nothing. In fact, there's nothing on the clipboard. (Check that by
inserting the cursor in gedit and selecting the Edit menu. Paste is disabled
because there's nothing on the clipboard.)

Workaround: You can cut and paste only when the email is opened.

Impact: People think cut and paste doesn't work in Evolution. (I didn't for a
short while.)

that works fine here. With Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V or with a selection and middle click in
gedit. Do you use warty or hoary ? Do you have the issue with other applications ?

This happens to me with hoary (and evolution 2.2.1.1). I've tried this with
firefox, gaim, and other applications and the clipboard seems to be functioning
fine with them. Is it nautilus or metacity that handles the clipboard? nautilus'
version is 2.10.0-ubuntu4 and metacity's is 1:2.10-0ubuntu1 if that helps.

does a selection and middle click work ?

the component which manages the clipboard is xorg

Yes it does work (I never knew middle-clicking would do that)! That's a good
workaround for now. However, there's definitely something very strange going on.
Try this:
(1) In Firefox with this bug displayed select some text (such as the bug subject)
(2) Select ctrl+c
(3) Launch gedit, right-click and choose paste
(4) The bug's subject text should appear in gedit
(5) Switch to Evolution's preview window
(6) Select some text and middle-click
(7) Switch back to gedit and use ctrl+v to paste
(8) You will see the original text you cut from the Firefox window.
(9) Now middle-click in gedit.
(10) Now you see the text from the Evolution Preview Window.

It's like there's two clipboards. I wonder what's going on here. :)

There is 2 clipboards, the middle-click select is one, the ctrl-C/ctrl-V the
other one

do you still get this issue?

I would like to clairify this issue. Right-clicking to bring up the contextural
menu and then selecting "copy" does not copy the date into the clipboard. All
other copying methods (key command, middle-click) work.

Firefox in Ubuntu seems to delete the middle-click clipboard on startup. This
bug does not exist for Firefox in Debian unstable running KDE (haven't checked
gnome.)
So you get a url in your email, right? You double-click your mutt terminal in
konsole/xterm, crack open Firefox, and middle-click..... and it's forgotten it.
Which is really
annoying.
Also middle-click anywhere on the browser should work, but in Ubuntu you have to
point the mouse directly at the address bar to give it the URL. Using a laptop
trackpad makes this really annoying.

Jens, could you please file a separate bug for firefox? This bug is spread
across enough components already. Thanks.

After today's Evolution update, the problem I was experiencing with the Mail pane is gone, but there is a different issue with the Contact preview pane. I should probably file it as a new bug... let me know.

Contact Preview:
1. Select a portion of text in the preview pane
- Right click it, no menu comes up to let you copy.
- ctrl+c: It puts the whole vCard for that entry into your clipboard. Like so:
