evolution does not display active email

I have had this twice now. Even though I can select a mail in the message list, it is not shown in the preview pane below - the preview is stuck on one particular mail message.
. If I double click an empty window open up.
If I hit reply then the "stuck" message is replied to.

Presently Evolution is completely broken for me.

I've quit the application and expunged that folder, but no difference.

I find this seems to happen with mails larger than a certain size. But it may be some other aspect of the mail.
