Evolution has black areas with standard settings (non-GTK desktop)

Bug Description

I'm using a desktop environment which does not touch the GTK configuration on a fresh Ubuntu Precise installation.

I installed Evolution from the Ubuntu repository and the attached screenshot is what it looks like by default on Ubuntu Precise.

There are multiple black areas and the theme is extremely ugly.
