evolution 2.1 from hoary doesn't work with news.optusnet.com.au

The newsgroup server news.optusnet.com.au doesn't work with evolution 2.1 - with
evolution 2.0 I am not asked for a password, but evolution 2.1 demands a
password. If I don't enter a password (leave the text box empty and hit OK), I
get an error "Cannot authenticate to server: 501 user Name|pass Password", or if
I do enter a password I get "Cannot authenticate to server: 502 : Access denied
to your node"
