Always prompted for Exchange password when composing new mail; never works

Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

Every time I go to compose a new mail, I get a dialogue saying:

"Enter password for Global Address List (user amj06)"

I enter my password (which works fine for accessing my mail folders), and it says:

"Failed to authenticate.
Enter password for Global Address List (user amj06)"

As a further bug, the window title for this second dialogue contains the \n and screws up the rendering a bit with Metacity.

I have to just cancel this dialogue every time. This has always been a problem since I started using Exchange, back on Edgy, in October last year.

I've been getting this error as well. Is there some different way I need to enter my OWA server that would fix this?

Are there any known cases of this actually working at all?

I'm getting the same message as well on Ubuntu 7.10. Any known workarounds?

I am now experiencing this problem after upgrading to Ubuntu 7.10. A solution to this very annoying problem would be greatly appreciated.

I have just installed Gutsy and now face this issue.

Before, when I was using Feisty this did not happen, and I was happily using the GAL.

However I see others have come across this for awhile, so it seems strange.

I did some research and I have a solution (but it's somewhat ugly). The first part is to specify a server in the Global Catalog list/ Active Directory box. That's under the Edit menu. Preferences, select the Exchange account, select Edit, then click the Receiving options tab. The ugly part is that your sysadmin has to allow access to port 3268, which probably won't be available if you are accessing your Exchange server over the internet using OWA. Allowing the world to access your Global Catalog server doesn't seem very secure :)

One more thing. This bug happens even if you create a message in another account in Evolution. It really only makes sense to pull up the Active Directory user list if you're going to be using Exchange to send the message.

Actually, I made the prompt go away by changing the Auto completion preferences for the Exchange account. Go to the Edit menu, choose Preferences. In the window that pop up, choose AutoCompletion and uncheck "Global Address List" under your Exchange account.

Here's a screen shot of the window I'm talking about (with my Exchange email address blacked out).

I'm not sure if this will work for the rest of you but I changed the server name of the catalog server from "catalogserver".domain.local to "catalogserver" under "Receiving options". In other words, use the hostname rather than the FQDN. When I made the change, the prompt went away.

I have just confirmed that changing server.domain.local to just server fixes the problem here as well. Perhaps upstream should be notified.

Hi,

same thing here. Let me summarize the problem and workarounds:

Problems:
1. GAL search does not work (neither via autocompletion nor via Contacts)
2. even if you disable autocompletion is disabled one get password prompts when trying to create new mail

Problem #2:
- clearing the GAL address or removing domain part, turning off autocompletion for GAL, than evolution --force-shutdown solves the problem

Problem #1:
- no know global workaround
- about gjabornis solution (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution-exchange/+bug/131616/comments/9):
in our network I foudn these ports open on the GAL server and still GAL search does not work:
PORT STATE SERVICE
53/tcp open domain
88/tcp open kerberos-sec
135/tcp open msrpc
139/tcp open netbios-ssn
382/tcp open hp-managed-node
383/tcp open hp-alarm-mgr
389/tcp open ldap
445/tcp open microsoft-ds
464/tcp open kpasswd5
593/tcp open http-rpc-epmap
636/tcp open ldapssl
1024/tcp open kdm
1025/tcp open NFS-or-IIS
1032/tcp open iad3
1033/tcp open netinfo
2301/tcp open compaqdiag
3268/tcp open globalcatLDAP
3269/tcp open globalcatLDAPssl
3389/tcp open ms-term-serv

Br,
      Loci

Ps.: I'm happy to test any new ideas, but I don't have access to neither the exchange nor to the GAL server.

Hi,

I was trying to handle this problem too...

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10.

I've changed the FQDN for the IP address of the server... Now it's working ok...

I hope it helps...

Cheers,

LanHnz

I have tried all the workarounds mentioned here with no love.

We have a hosted Exchange solution. I will attach my debugging log to see if that shed some light on anything.

can confirm that it is fixed in 8.11

Thanks,
