I would like to add, even though I got the error, once I cleared it the contact still updated in Evolution as well as on Ubuntu 1 (verified online)

I'm getting the same error trying to update contacts in Evolution. In my case when I clear the error, the contact does not update. I'm having to go online to Ubuntu One to update any of my contacts at the moment.

Same as #4 here, but i think i found a workaround:
Try killing the task /usr/lib/evolution/e-addressbook-factory and restarting evolution.
After doing that i can edit contacts and they sync to ubuntu one.
I'm on a clean installation of natty 64 bit.

The idea is from here, also i do not use signal 9 but signal 15 to kill the process:

I am able to edit the Ubuntu One contacts only one one of my two machines. The other one, which has a fresh copy of Natty, refuses to save the contact edits with the same error as detailed in the original bug description. I have tried the workaround presented in #5, but to no avail. Confirming.

Finally, it did work. I haven't done anything more except installing the following packages:
gir1.2-json-glib-1.0
gir1.2-couchdb-1.0
gir1.2-desktopcouch-1.0
gir1.2-json-glib-1.0

I don't know if this made a difference. Rodrigo Moya said these packages were required here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/evolution-couchdb/+bug/727370/comments/29.

I always get the "GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._e_2ddata_2dbook_2derror.Code400: Cannot modify contact: Bad Request" error upon first edit. Sometimes, as I workaround, I can click on the "Mail" tab in the lower left pane, then return to Contacts and retry the edit and it will work, but not always.

The workaround in #5 works for me.

I have tried the #5 workaround and #8 but repeatedly get the message shown in #9. The workaround in #9 does not work. What is the status of this bug?

I've been trying for over 18 months to shift from Windows and Outlook Express to Ubuntu and Evolution so that I can use the U1 Contacts synch and the Evolution Categories for tagging contacts. It will be sweet when it works for me! Until I can update contacts and have them synch between my desktop and netbook I'm forced to stay with Windows. :(
