In my opinion the menu location has to do with that in the following way: before Natty, the menu was in the evince window. In Natty, the menu is not so easily discoverable (there is another bug on this issue). Regardless of that, let's take the most common use-cases of using evince : it is meant to handle PDF files. What can people do with PDF files?
* read/scroll through PDF files -> available with scrolling and using the next/previous page buttons in the toolbar
* go to page number -> available in the toolbar
* search pdf -> available toolbar
* print -> only available in the menu, but can be added to the toolbar
I think these are the most commonly used features of evince.

As the toolbar editor supports adding the print toolbar item, I think it would be nice to have it added by default.

ok, I've no strong opinion on that out but if not having it there encourage people to stop wasting paper it's a win ;-)

Then I'll close this bug as an Opinion. If anyone wants to have it in the toolbar, he/she can add it.

Well, my wife and some students were not smart enough to add the print
button to the tool bar. First action of them wast to complain about that,
and install adobe reader to print. Remember we're making a big change on
interface design with natty and better user experience is a big motivator.

Would she have been able to find the print item if the menu was in the application dialog rather than in the unity bar? Seems like adding icons to applications should be done only if it has sense, not to workaround the fact that unity makes it hard to notice where the menus can be used

Of course, if the menu bar was in the app dialog would be natural for
someone used to work on Lucid to find the print option. That is the point
here. Unity has an interface that focuses buttons/icons instead of menus. In
Unity should be natural to have a print button on tool bar.

You can edit the toolbar by right-clicking the toolbar or just by selecting Edit>Toolbar in the menu.

The HUD doesn't work for evince (bug 1088778 ?) , and the help for evince clearly states in many places to click a non-existent File > Print (bug 1247317). Together they make the absence of a Print button a bigger issue.

Upstream report closed "RESOLVED NOTABUG" on 2011-05-10.

This bug report refers to the old evince interface.

As the new interface, which exists in all currently supported
Ubuntu versions, doesn't have a configurable toolbar I'm closing
this bug report as it is no longer valid.
