Bug Description

Evince (and possibly other programs) should be given an option in preferences to maximise automatically when a pdf file is opened, to save the irritating requirement to click on maximise every time you open a pdf you have not opened previously.

Thanks a lot for reporting this bug, however I am marking this as invalid as it constitutes a feature request which is outwith the definition of a papercut. For more information on what does constitute a papercut, please see here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Charlie: I think we would be hesitant about adding an option. It would be much better to work out /automatically/ if it would be better to start full-screen.

Can you describe/outline the situations (how they would be deteced) when the user is likely to require Evince to be maximised. For instance on a small Netbook screen.

Well as a uni student, I constantly have .pdf files of course notes etc. For all of these files, I typically have them full screen (with the 'Fit to width' option) to read easily. Personally, if an option cannot be included in the preferences to 'Maximise on open', I would like to see the window open in the same state as the last pdf file when it was closed (when I say last pdf, I mean the last pdf file to be read, not necessarily the same pdf that is currently being read).

I find it an annoyance that for me that virtually every pdf file has to 'opened' with two clicks (1 double-click to open, another to maximise) - it would be much more efficient to adjust the settings on wanted change (rather than from the default). I personally think that people tend to have a single style for of reading pdf files (whether it be maximised or not) - they do not have different settings for every single pdf, so, as mentioned above, if Evince could remember the window settings (maximised/windowed, fit to width/fit to page, etc.) on close, and open the next time with those same settings, it would make life easier.

I'm sure there was a fix recently for Evince which meant that it opened as it was previously closed, which is atleast part of your problem.
Seems to have regressed though!

The bug with it not remembering previous window size is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/evince/+bug/544639
I'm leaving this bug unduped for the possibility of adding a config option?

This bug is an upstream one and it would be quite helpful if somebody experiencing it could send the bug the to the people writing the software. You can learn more about how to do this at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME . Thanks in advance!
