3) Evince should open.
4)

I am using NeatX (NoMachine NX free server) http://code.google.com/p/neatx/
ppa:freenx-team/ppa

When it is used in Floating Windows mode (no virtual desktop) evince drops with this message:

"No protocol specified
cannot parse arguments: Can't open display :"

It's the only application with such a problem...

Doesn't work even with ssh instead of NX:
ssh -X <targethost> gnome-session

error message:
(evince:2587): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session manager: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported

All others processes are working as expected.

This bug is an upstream one and it would be quite helpful if somebody experiencing it could send the bug the to the people writing the software. You can learn more about how to do this for various upstreams at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME . Thanks in advance!

I had this same experience. PDF files were not opening in evince. Desktop is a nomachine client connected to neatx server. Example:

    $ evince
    No protocol specified
    Cannot parse arguments: Cannot open display:
    $

Workaround, in the same terminal as above:

    $ xhost +
    access control disabled, clients can connect from any host
    $

Now evince opens PDF files, e.g. from within Chromium.

Speculation that the xhost command should be added to the NX client's "Run the following command":
E.g
xfce4-session & xhost +

HTH?

Had the same issue, that's not an evinve bug but an apparmor setting.
