Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince

any pdf files that are opened, are not zoomed sufficiently.
an A4 sized pdf opens on 100% zoom to a page of 2"x3" approx. (instead of 8.3 × 11.7in ) (on a 32inch 136-x768 screen)
the 400% zoom results in pages of approximately of standard size (1:1 ratio)

i'm using ubuntu karmic 9.10 with Evince 2.28.1-0ubuntu1.2, using poppler 0.12.0-0ubuntu2.1 (cairo)

Your experience is possibly due to using such a large screen at such a low resolution. Is it a television? Even 19 inch wide-screen PC monitors are usually 1440x900.

yes i was using my 32-inch 1360x768 Sony Bravia TV as my monitor for display as my 19-inch Viewsonic 1440x900 screen had gone for repairs.

now i am using my 19-inch screen and all is fine.

i suppose it was the fault of using the TV as a computer monitor.

I do understand that pdfs are print formats, i.e. they are rendered exactly the way they are to be printed. a pdf rendered @100% zoom on my 19-inch screen is more or less (+/- 0.2 inches height and width) same size as the printed document (8.5x11inches). but @100% on my 32-inch TV results only a 'page' 2x4inches

Are you able to see this bus network plan with evince:
http://www.transisere.fr/ftp/FR_libre1/Plan%20du%20r%C3%A9seau%20Transis%C3%A8re%202009-2010.pdf

The plan is too small even with a 400% zoom and I can't zoom more.

right, the document is way to small, so with a 400% zoom you're unable to see it, will search upstream, thanks.

@Pedro Villavicencio

this bug is not intended to be a duplicate of bug #173384.

the bug that you have mentioned #173384 is a feature request for custom scaling. (a good request, in my opinion)

this bug relates to inappropriate zoom on my 32-inch TV running at 1366x768 (native) resolution.
any pdf of an A4 size, when zoomed at 100% should result in an image (rasterized) to size of the actual A4 paper (210mm × 297mm).

my tv doesn't display them at the correct size.

the file posted by "jerome" is of size 1.57 x 1.57 inch

I think your TV (or video driver) probably reports the wrong dpi and so the algorithms fail. This is, more likely than not, a bug in your video driver rather than evince or poppler unless it does report the right dpi but poppler ignores it because it doesn't correctly guess the display port (or something like that).

I'm not familiar with xrandr but I would guess it has some functionality for querying these sorts of things.
