printing with multiple pages per side silently fails

Bug Description
Binary package hint: evince
Printing to a HP Laserjet 4350, with settings "2 pages per side" and "2 sided short edge", silently fails. No errors are in /var/cups/error_log but nothing comes out of the printer.
With "2 pages per side" and "1 sided only", printing to the printer succeeds.
With "2 pages per side" and "2 sided short edge", printing to a file succeeds.
Using "xpdf" and "lpr -o two-sided-long-edge -o number-up=2" also succeeds.
A copy of the error log with LogLevel=Debug is attached; the relevant job is number 577 and starts at time 10.21:32.
