Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince

Printing a PDF file (attached) from Evince to a HP Laserjet 4500 using sockets and the included Postscript PPD (HP Color LaserJet 4500 v2014.200 Postscript (recommended) did work on 9.04 but does not work any more on 9.10.

The PPDs from 9.04 and 9.10 are identical (diff compared)

Printing out of OpenOffice or other applications works fine (at least I did not come across any problems so far).

Printing from Evince using hpjis and PCL on the same printer works fine on 9.10.

If you need further information, please let me know.

Can this bug be a duplicate of bug #419143?

What seems to be similar is that my printer is connected to the network using an internal Jet Direct print server.

My analysis to this:

The printer did not change, the file did not change, the PPD did not change so the only thing new in Karmic are printer driving libraries.

In Bug 419143 at some stage one suggested it was an error in the PS interpreter of HP. Good start. The printer was there before Ubuntu even was introduced, it works nice with Windowss with the before mentioned testfile.

If I can be of any serious help, let me know.

Another hint:

I have installed 3 printer drivers on my machine:

HPlib with PS driver
Socket with PS driver
Socket with hplib pcl3 driver

In most cases, one works but most likely not one single solution works for all (Evince works fine mostly with PCL, OpenOffice requires PS).

There are no errors in the cups error logs.

You might close this bug as well as all the other unsolved bugs that I reported.

The problem of this issue is, that evince sends the data to the printer and does not stop when the printer reports buffer full. This hangs evince.

Its not a cups problem.

Maybe I wait till Ubuntu is ready for prime use.
