Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince

I have the following situation. Evince is displaying a PDF file but the window is in the background. I generate a new version of the PDF in the foreground. When the file changes, evince automatically reloads and its window appears in the foreground. That's good because at this point I want to check how my changes look like anyway. But what is annoying is that the evince window is not focussed.

This is on Ubuntu 8.10, with evince 2.24.1-0ubuntu1.

thanks for the report, are you using visual effects? does the same happens if you disable them? may you tell us a few easy steps in order to recreate the behavior? thanks.

Visual effects are already disabled.

$ evince bla.pdf &
$ vi bla.tex # make a change
$ make bla.pdf # uses latex, dvips, ps2pdf
Now after a second, the evince window moves from the background to the
foreground and shows the new version of bla.pdf. But the window is
not focussed.

I observe the same problem, also Ubuntu 8.10 with 2.24.1-0ubuntu1 with visual effects disabled. The simplest way I can recreate this behaviour is:

$ echo 'showpage' > test.ps
$ evince test.ps &
$ touch test.ps

As mentioned above, after the last command the evince window comes to the foreground but is not focused.

The auto-reloading function was mentioned in http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=304249

I believe that the correct behaviour would be for evince to stay in the background, not come to the foreground and get focus as the original post suggests.
