Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince

When I print
* multiple copies of PDF documents
* with odd number of pages in the document
* in double sided format

Following happens:
the back side of the last page on the first copy should be blank! but instead the first page of the next copy appears on it.
No blank pages are printed ==> the documents can not be separated (_copy1-last page_ and _copy2-first page_ on the same paper)

Software:
evince doc viewer 2.20.1
Document Viewer.
Using poppler 0.6 (cairo)

Ubuntu 7.10 regularly updated

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Intrepid Ibex. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Dear Pedro,

I will soon make the test you proposed. Is it OK if I do it on a
virtualbox guest mashine?

Have a nice autumn!

Dear Pedro,

thank you for working on Ubuntu, which is great!

I now made some tests with the LIVE CD (beta), finally i skipped the
virtual machine (guest additions failed:-( not really suprisingly), I
used my ACER TM2250g laptop.

Evince makes the same as in 8.04 LTS (if I chose the option 'collate'
for printing)
...so again: last-page.first-copy on the same paper as
first-page.second-copy.
If the option 'collate' is not active it is even more interesting.
While printing 2 copies of a 3 page document following happens:
first-page on both sides of first paper, second-page on both sides on
the second paper, etc.

I made the same test for Ooo word processor, and it printed fine with
the option 'collate' so it seems that the printer driver is OK.

I also looked around in the bug list. Please have a look at bug #258364
"Evince incorrectly prints multiple copies as one job".
It is maybe not the same, but the problem seems to have the same roots.

I hope that helps.

Have a nice evening
György

could somebody having the issue send the bug to bugzilla.gnome.org where the people writting the software will read it?

Yes of course I can report the bug on many sites but I believed
Lounchpad was a good place to report such a bug.
I am new to this... Is it really needed to report it twice?
I mean this way we easily double the work if two teams start to solve
the issue.

the ubuntu users are encouraged to send their issues to launchpad, this bug is likely an upstream one though and the ubuntu desktop team doesn't have the ressources to do all the upstream work there so the bug needs to be sent to bugzilla.gnome.org where the people writting the software will read it, you can do it or wait for a bug triager to do that, looking to the other evince printing issues on launchpad that is likely to take a while though it seems not a lot of bug triagers are using printers around so you might want to open the GNOME bug to speed things there

you can also add a bug watch on a GNOME bug so it will be updated automatically and nobody will duplicate work there

I humbly suggesting upping the importance for this bug. It's a BIG waste of paper, and it's here since 2 years ago, so a bit of pressure to solve it wouldn't be bad. And to issue backports at least back to LTS and Intrepid.

It's not a difficult one to trigger... help save the trees :-)

Just to comment, passing by, that this nice bug is still here with us.

Print the attached file and ask for two copies in a printer that default to double-sided printer. You will have one sheet ready to trash, with the image on the two sides.

Have a nice day,
