evince recent menu is empty

Bug Description

The "Recent" menu in Evince on Ubuntu Trusty Tahr stays empty, no matter how many files I recently opened. This was happening in Unity DE and even after I installed ubuntu-gnome-desktop, the behavior is persisting.
